The Organization
Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving Alameda County older adults. LAS provides individual counseling and community education through its Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP). Counseling is provided to Medicare beneficiaries in the areas of Medicare, supplemental coverage including Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans, low-income assistance programs, and long-term care insurance. Through its Legal Services Program, LAS provides legal advice and information, representation in court and administrative hearings, referrals to other community resources, and community education in several legal practice areas, including: prevention of elder abuse, consumer law, public benefits, housing, guardianships, naturalization, and health law.
The Role
The HICAP Medicare Advocate I will support the HICAP department by performing a wide range of administrative, client-facing, and case-related tasks. This position will be responsible for scheduling client appointments and providing direct counseling to clients on their Medicare rights and options. This position will also deliver educational presentations and provide administrative and programmatic support. The HICAP Medicare Advocate I will help create a welcoming office space for both HICAP Counselors, clients, and staff. This position is funded by a one-year grant and is contingent upon continued funding, which is anticipated but not guaranteed.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- HICAP appointment scheduling
- Use HICAP scheduling system to make client appointments and send confirmations and reminders
- Oversee and update the appointment calendar as needed
- Direct client assistance
- Maintain HICAP Counselor registration
- Provide direct counseling to clients and complete client intakes
- Review volunteer HICAP Counselor intakes for accuracy and quality assurance
- HICAP program support
- Review and update client fact sheets
- Send relevant handouts to potential clients and counselors as needed, mail hard copies to HICAP Counselors
- Maintain inventory of current fact sheets and publications; manage the in-office and online libraries
- Regularly attend HICAP team meetings
- Outreach program support
- Maintain registration as a Community Educator; deliver educational presentations and staff outreach events throughout Alameda County
- Provide administrative support for outreach program; pack and unpack bags for outreach events
- Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or higher
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability and patience to gather detailed client information, and create clear and concise summaries for HICAP Counselors
- Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Detail oriented and organized
- Commitment to serving the underserved; sensitivity towards older adults and persons with disabilities
- Computer proficient, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and database knowledge
Preferred:
- Bilingual desired
- Customer service experience
Working conditions & physical requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods and alternate between sitting and motion tasks frequently
- Ability to use phone and computer systems for long periods of time
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to travel within Alameda County for outreach events
Compensation and Benefits:
- This is a non-exempt position with a salary of $27.22 per hour
- 35-hour work week
- Four weeks of vacation and two weeks of sick leave per year accrues from the first day of hire.
- Three personal days per year, available immediately
- Generous paid holidays each year (13-15)
