    Description

    About the Job

    About Asiyah Women’s Center

The Asiyah Women’s Center is the first women’s domestic violence emergency center in New York City to address the gap in appropriate residential services for the Arab, Middle-Eastern, Muslim, South Asian (AMEMSA), and/or Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) population. Our mission is to provide temporary housing for victims of domestic violence and women facing eviction and/or homelessness. By connecting under-resourced women in our community to job opportunities, mental health and medical services, permanent housing, health insurance, and legal assistance, we aim to help women rebuild their lives after deeply traumatic experiences.

Our team is made up of passionate, mission-driven professionals committed to serving with compassion, cultural competency, and respect. We believe emotional intelligence, empathy, and strong teamwork are just as essential as professional expertise. Here, you’ll find a collaborative environment where your voice matters, your ideas are valued, and your work directly impacts women and families in our community.

    Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, mission-driven Immigration Attorney to provide legal support and immigration advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, forced displacement, housing instability, and related crises. This role will focus on helping clients navigate immigration protections and legal pathways including, but not limited to, VAWA petitions, U-Visas, T-Visas, asylum matters, adjustment of status, family-based petitions, SIJS, humanitarian relief, and other immigration remedies relevant to survivors and vulnerable populations.

This individual will work collaboratively with Asiyah’s social services team—including case managers, social workers, and leadership—to ensure clients receive holistic, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed care. The ideal candidate understands the intersection between immigration status, abuse, housing insecurity, and systemic barriers and can advocate fiercely while maintaining empathy and professionalism.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide direct immigration legal services and consultations to clients experiencing domestic violence, housing instability, trafficking, or related vulnerabilities
    • Assess eligibility for immigration relief including VAWA, U-Visas, T-Visas, asylum, humanitarian parole, adjustment of status, SIJS, work authorization, family reunification, and naturalization pathways
    • Prepare, file, and manage immigration petitions, applications, and supporting legal documentation
    • Represent clients in immigration proceedings, interviews, hearings, and communications with government agencies as appropriate
    • Collaborate closely with case workers, social workers, and leadership to develop coordinated client support plans
    • Educate clients on their legal rights and immigration options in a clear, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed manner
    • Maintain accurate client case notes, legal records, and documentation in compliance with confidentiality and legal standards
    • Support grant reporting needs through case tracking, outcomes, and legal service metrics
    • Build relationships with pro bono legal networks, immigration organizations, and external referral partners
    • Conduct occasional workshops or informational sessions on immigration rights and protections for survivors and immigrant communities
    • Stay current on immigration law changes and best practices impacting vulnerable populations

    Qualifications

    • J.D. or LLM from an accredited law school
    • Active admission and good standing with a state bar (New York preferred)
    • Minimum 2 years of immigration law experience, preferably serving immigrant, refugee, or survivor populations
    • Experience handling VAWA, U-Visa, asylum, SIJS, family petitions, and humanitarian immigration matters
    • Strong understanding of confidentiality, ethics, and trauma-informed legal advocacy
    • Demonstrated ability to work with survivors of domestic violence, housing instability, or marginalized communities
    • Training or experience in trauma-informed care and domestic violence crisis intervention
    • Fluency in English required; proficiency in Arabic, Urdu, Bangla, or other relevant languages strongly preferred
    • Proven emotional intelligence; able to build trust, de-escalate tense situations, and foster positive relationships with clients and staff
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, years of experience, past training, skills and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and local geographic market data. A range of paid time off, and/or other benefits also available.
