Green Educator Program Manager

The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization created in 1979, whose mission is to divert waste materials from landfills by collecting and redistributing donated goods as low-or-no-cost supplies for art, education, and social services in our second-hand retail store in Oakland. We also educate the public about the environmental benefits of reusing materials. We are seeking a 3/5 time (24 hours/week) program manager who will help us develop and grow the Green Educator Program. The position reports to the Executive Director.

Green Educator Program: The Green Educator Program was begun by The Depot in 2008 to provide free or low-cost materials to school teachers and inspiration for incorporating reuse into the classroom. Over the past many years, school budgets have shrunk. Many teachers have had to supplement their classroom supplies by paying for them from their own pockets. The Depot’s Green Educator Program offers teachers $25 a month in free materials for their class activities. Each year the program supports over 800 educators in the Bay Area by providing free materials to pre-school through high school teachers who teach more than 37,000 students among them.

Green Educator Program Manager Job Description: The job of the Green Educator Program Manager is to communicate on a regular basis with our Green Educator members and to expand the program. Communications include soliciting feedback on our Program offerings and what other services might benefit members. The Manager will be responsible for managing our Reuse and Repair Workshops and for designing and managing the two new Green Educator projects that will begin in fall 2026.

New Projects for the Green Educator Program:* This year (2026-27) we are launching two new Green Educator programs. These include (1) Classroom Visits, where teachers bring elementary and middle school classes to The Depot to learn about zero waste and how The Depot supports those efforts, and to participate in a project using Depot recycled materials to create something new; and (2) Teachers Workshops* where teachers come to The Depot to learn recycling/reuse projects that they can share with students in their classrooms.

Tasks:

• Maintain Green Educator mailing list and regular communication.
• Interact with Green Educators to determine their greatest needs and concerns that can be met by the Green Educator Program.
• Manage ongoing Reuse and Repair Workshops for the community.
• Work with the Executive Director to design and manage the Classroom Visits and Teachers Workshop Programs, to begin in fall 2026.
• Work with the Store Manager to set a calendar for Classroom Visits and Teachers Workshop Programs for fall 2026 and winter 2027.
• Lead actual Classroom Visits. Visits will last approximately 90 minutes and include a tour of the Depot, a description of what the Depot does, and a 60 minute reuse and recycle project using Depot materials.
• Lead actual Teacher Workshops. Workshops are 90 minute events where teachers are instructed in reuse and recycle projects that they can do in their classrooms. Print outs of curriculum are included.
• Evaluate new programs and make suggestions for changes and additions to the programs.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree or five years equivalent experience in program management, curriculum development, informal education, or art and environmental education

Required skills: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and exercise good judgment in a variety of situations; flexibility, creativity and ability to think on one’s feet; strong, honest, kind communication skills; respect for serving a diverse community; understanding of social media and marketing tools; competency with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, ability to learn new applications as needed.

Desired skills: Experience teaching elementary or middle school youth; Teaching certificate;
