    Description

    Boston Teacher Residency (BTR), an AmeriCorps program, is a clinical teacher preparation program whose graduates support student achievement from day one and who stay in teaching, continuing to refine and improve their practice. Created in 2002 as a joint initiative between the Boston Public Schools and BPE, BTR was designed to meet the evolving needs of Boston’s children and families.

    BTR prepares teachers in

    • Elementary (grades 1-6)
    • English (grades 6-12)
    • Math and/or Computer Science (grades 6-12)
    • General Science (grades 6-9)
    • Biology, Chemistry, or Physics (grades 9-12)

    Program Highlights

    • Learn to teach in a collaborative and supportive environment with experienced educators
    • Complete an integrated graduate curriculum designed and taught by BTR faculty
    • Earn a low-cost M.Ed. granted by UMass Boston and an MA Initial Teacher License
    • Participate in continued professional development and receive ongoing coaching after graduation

    Minimum Eligibility: To apply for the Boston Teacher Residency program and receive AmeriCorps benefits, you must:

    • Hold a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program year for which you are applying
    • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident alien
    • Agree to state & federal background checks

    Financial Support

    • BPE offers a no-interest loan for BTR program costs and reduced UMass Boston tuition
    • May apply for additional financial aid and student loans through UMass Boston
    • Eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award ($7,395) upon successful completion of service
