United Neighborhood Houses (UNH) is a policy and social change organization with a mission to promote and strengthen settlement houses’ neighborhood-based, multi-service approach to improving the lives of low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. We represent 45 settlement houses that collectively reach 840,000 New Yorkers from all walks of life. Our role is to amplify the voices, perspectives, and experiences of our members—fighting for a New York where everyone belongs and has opportunities to thrive. UNH advances the settlement house movement by driving public policy, offering peer learning and professional development, and supporting innovative practices across the movement.

For more than 100 years, settlement houses have been at the forefront of progressive movements. UNH was founded at the turn of the 20th century to advance settlement houses’ collective voices and drive social reforms. In our early days, UNH and our member settlement houses led the successful fight for strong child labor laws and housing regulations addressing dangerous tenement houses, and, more recently, expanding the summer youth employment program and working towards the creation of universal childcare.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will play a key role in advancing United Neighborhood Houses’ (UNH) efforts to strengthen civic participation, build community leadership, and collective power across the New York State’s settlement house network. Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the coordinator will provide training, technical assistance, and strategic support to help settlement houses learn and grow settlement houses’ mobilization efforts, strengthen partnerships, and advance coordinated engagement strategies that support UNH’s advocacy and community building-goals.

What You’ll Do

Develop and Deliver Trainings, Tools, and Resources

• Develop and deliver training, tools and technical assistance to strengthen settlement house members’ capacity to recruit, engage, and mobilize their community members around elections and civic action.
• Help to build a curriculum to educate and motivate settlement house staff about the importance of the 2030 Census.
• Work closely with the Member Services team to align community engagement trainings and events with organizational learning goals, leveraging creative approaches to expand

participation, deepen engagement, and enhance program effectiveness.

Manage UNH’s GOTV and Get Out the Count Programs

• Manage and implement UNH’s nonpartisan Get Out the Vote (GOTV) program.
• Build and implement systems to track outreach, voter engagement, and participation outcomes, while supporting settlement houses in developing and maintaining long-term community contact networks.
• Coordinate learning community activities, regular convenings, site visits and partner communications, fostering peer learning and ensuring timely collection of progress updates, feedback and program outcomes. Provide Direct Support to Settlement Houses
• Coach and support settlement houses in engaging staff and community members in participation, advocacy, community engagement, and movement building efforts.
• Support UNH’s Community and Movement Building peer group, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and collective action among settlement house members.

Internal Coordination on Community Engagement

• Partner with the Policy and Advocacy team to design and execute strategic mobilization efforts for UNH’s advancing organizational legislative priorities and driving member engagement.
• Collaborate across teams to ensure community engagement strategies and programs are aligned with organizational priorities and opportunities for member participation.

What We’re Looking For

• 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, civic engagement or leading advocacy campaigns;
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects, manage timelines, and execute programs involving diverse stakeholders;
• Strong public speaking, written and verbal communication skills, and experience in presentations to a variety of audiences;
• Experience fostering collaboration across diverse groups of organizations/staff and advancing shared goals through collective action; and
• Familiarity with New York City and state nonprofit, settlement house, or community-based organization landscape;
• Ability to track program and engagement data, maintain accurate records, and support reporting using Excel, Google Sheets or similar tools.

Compensation & Benefits

This position pays $70,000-$75,000 depending on skills and experience. UNH offers a competitive

benefits package including:

UNH is currently operating on a hybrid schedule, with our office located in lower Manhattan. The training work includes significant local travel throughout the city and to Albany and other parts of New York State as required. UNH is committed to growth within the organization.
