Bang on a Can seeks an energetic, organized, resourceful Operations Manager to join our team of exceptional artists and dedicated staff to support our office operations, concerts, touring activities, and Long Play festival.
Bang on a Can is a dynamic NYC-based non-profit organization that presents, commissions, performs, curates, and produces cutting-edge classical, jazz, experimental and electronic music - rigorous, virtuosic, challenging and exciting. Through our 40 years of Bang on a Can Marathons in NYC and around the world and our 3-day destination festivals in Brooklyn and the Berkshires (LONG PLAY and LOUD WEEKEND), we’re committed to the future of contemporary composed music with passion and overflowing optimism. With more than 300 commissions, 1500 concerts worldwide, 200 record releases, the renowned Bang on a Can All-Stars ensemble, international cultural exchange, a Summer Institute and Festival at MASS MoCA, and major productions of Pulitzer Prize winning and other big scale multi-media works, Bang on a Can is a central force in the international music community.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Operations Manager is a multi-dimensional role at the intersection of music, live performance, artist services, logistics, and administration. The ideal candidate is organized, resourceful, comfortable juggling multiple projects, and able to work independently while communicating effectively with artists, venues, presenters, vendors, colleagues, and the public. No two days are exactly alike. The Operations Manager position will work in close collaboration with the Executive Director, Development, Communications, and Production staff, the three founders who serve as Artistic Directors; and collaborating Artists. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys keeping many moving parts organized and working with artists, venues, presenters, vendors, and colleagues in a small busy arts office environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
General Operations
- Supervise and assist in overall office administration and program management, vendors, equipment maintenance, IT coordination, HR support, email inquiries, management of digital/physical files.
Concert Production
- Support local and touring concert schedule including rehearsals, travel, hotel, and shipping arrangements, itineraries, venue coordination, comp lists, program materials, artist communications, and production logistics.
Festival Operations, Artist and Customer Service
- Artist Services: arrange hotel accommodations and room blocks for visiting artists; coordinate with hotels and festival staff; hire and oversee a seasonal Long Play Artist Services Manager.
- Long Play FOH: develop annual front-of-house plans, coordinate with venues and ticket buyers, hire and oversee FOH managers and volunteers, design/order wristbands, manage FOH paperwork and comp lists.
Website, Communications, Archival
- Update events, news, and other website content in coordination with the communications team.
- Manage music library & archives: organize scores, PDFs, MIDI files, audio, video, photographs, and other concert materials across digital and physical archives.
- Audio/video: Perform occasional light editing of concert audio and video.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, strategize, work independently, and think nimbly within a small organization.
- Strong communication and follow-through
- Collegial, collaborative approach to decision-making.
- Broad organizational skills, computer and file-management skills, and a track record as a self-starter.
- 2+ years of experience in performing arts administration, event production, music, hospitality, or related fields*
SALARY RANGE, HOURS & LOCATION
The salary for this position is $60,000 + benefits. Benefits include health insurance (100% premium coverage), dental plan, 403b retirement plan. Position is full-time with some flexibility in scheduling hours, an expectation to attend New York City area performances and events. The position will be based out of the Bang on a Can Office at 80 Hanson Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217. Start date: October 2026.
