    About the Position

    The International Examiner seeks a Business Operations Manager to oversee the newspaper advertising sales and manage business operations, maintaining positive relations with the community and businesses to maximize possible earned revenue for the organization. This is a hybrid position with a minimum of two days in the office.

    Since 1974, the International Examiner is a community‑led media organization that produces culturally grounded journalism to preserve stories, cultivate civic conversations, and build strength and solidarity across Seattle’s Chinatown International District and Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. For over 52 years, we have produced a monthly newspaper and maintain a vibrant online presence, delivering news, features, and stories with a hyper-local focus on independent community journalism and in-depth storytelling.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Newspaper Advertising Sales and Advertising Operations (50%)

    • Respond and liaise to all advertising inquiries, and proactively initiate inquiries to potential new vendors to achieve a minimum goal of $10K advertising sales per month.
    • Generate advertising invoices for vendors and follow up to ensure payment is collected at 60 and 90 days.
    • Develop and update advertising media kit to share with prospective vendors.
    • Develop and cultivate positive relationships with advertising vendors.
    • Submit all print advertisements from the ad sales in the issue Dropbox on Tuesday of production week (one week before the IE Newspaper goes to print.)

    Newspaper Distribution (10%)

    • Coordinate IE newspaper distribution and manage distributors.
    • Coordinate with printers and track distribution numbers from pickup points each month.
    • Quarterly reports on distribution.
    • Explore new expansion opportunities.

    Newspaper Membership (10%)

    • Manage the IE newspaper subscriptions and mailing
    • Maintain subscriber list with the Development Manager.

    Operations & Office Administration (15%)

    • Respond to program inquiries and as assigned.
    • Annually review benefits vendors for cost and effectiveness, and recommend vendor continuation or changes to the IE Board and Editor-in-Chief.
    • Update and renew required website management and organizational software subscriptions.
    • Open mail and deposit checks as needed
    • Meet with the bookkeeper weekly to ensure transactions are accurately categorized, invoices are issued, bills are paid, and organize and clarify other financial matters.
    • Order office supplies as needed.

    Other (15%)

    • Coordinate with the Editor-in-Chief to engage with, develop, and cultivate relationships with donors, grantees, community organizations/members, and neighborhood stakeholders as assigned.
    • In collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, support, manage, or lead special projects, such as IE-wide initiatives and projects with other programs, process improvement, and partnership building.
    • Attend regular and emerging meetings as established.
    • Engage in professional development opportunities
    • Other duties as needed

    Qualifications

    Minimum:

    • At least 2 years of experience managing projects or initiatives with community impact with a minimum Associate Degree in a relevant area such as Business, Communications, Ethnic Studies, Journalism, or Sociology, or
    • At least 4 years of experience managing projects or initiatives with community impact without a college degree
    • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, team building, conflict management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficient in relevant digital applications and equipment.

    Desirable:

    • Operations background and experience.
    • Business operations experience.
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant area such as Business, Communications, Ethnic Studies, Journalism, or Sociology. (Two years of college equates to one year of experience.)
    • Familiarity with Seattle Chinatown ID and commitment to engage, preserve, and revitalize the CID neighborhood and the diverse communities in South Seattle and the Greater Seattle area.
    • Familiarity with Adobe Suite products and Google Suite products

    Must have the ability to travel to sites where events and activities are located.
