    Description

The Field School of Hvar is a place-based enrichment program on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, rooted in the values of stewardship, enlightenment, and dignity. We are seeking a Summer Boats Guide to lead our "Explorers" track — one of three thematic programs for children ages 5–10 — during our five two-week summer sessions.

This is program is an immersive encounter with the history, ecology, and identity of the Adriatic through one of its most iconic objects: the boat. Drawing on boatmaking, nautical history, navigation, carpentry, fishing, and marine biology, the Explorers Guide will help children design and build small model boats that embody a legend or episode from Dalmatian history — Greek colonists, Venetian traders, pirate princes — and race them in a wacky regatta at the end of each session. Learning is hands-on, project-based, and deeply connected to place.

We do not expect our Guides to have expertise across all of these areas! Professional experience in childcare or education is essential, as is enthusiasm for culture and the outdoors. The Field School will provide two weeks of paid training before families arrive, and you will receive a set of detailed lesson materials to work from. Finally, we will adapt the emphasis of the Explorers program to the Guide's strengths and passions. For example, if your background is marine biology, we can amplify those activities. If you love carpentry, we can spend more time with boatmaking.

Guides lead their groups of children four days a week. The fifth day is dedicated to admin and to hosting a workshop for our children and/or adults in our local community.

Lifeguard certification is required (or must be obtained before the start date). We will also need a criminal background check and two professional references. EU right to work is required.

The role is full-time, with afternoon and evening hours (1–9pm). Compensation includes a stipend of €900/month plus a private one-bedroom apartment on the sea, within an easy 10-minute walk of the charming town of Jelsa. No car necessary.
