Details
Description
Engagement Type: Independent Consultant
Commitment: ~3 days/week (20–25 hours per week)
Remuneration: INR 1000–1,500 per hour — adjusted to location if not in India
Duration: 6 months
Location: Remote, with at least 4 hrs overlap with India working hours (9am–6pm IST)
Background
Fortify Health is a nonprofit organisation working to reduce iron deficiency anaemia at scale by supporting wheat flour fortification across India.
As the organisation has grown in scale and complexity — multi-entity, multi-currency, multi-donor operations — we are entering a deliberate phase of financial systems strengthening. Our objective is not incremental improvement, but the design of a robust data architecture that converts our financial inputs into reliable, decision-useful outputs.
We are seeking a mid-career professional who thinks in systems and builds in data. This is not an operational finance role, nor a traditional accounting engagement. It is a structured consulting engagement focused on designing and building scalable financial data systems for a growing organisation.
Objective of the Engagement
The purpose of this engagement is to:
- Take raw financial inputs (bank statements, grant inflows, spending reports, payroll data) and architect a structured data system that produces clean, reliable outputs
- Build financial models and dashboards that leadership can use for strategic decisions
- Automate routine financial processes, reducing manual effort and error
A detailed and sequenced project plan will be developed jointly at the start of the engagement. The examples below illustrate the level and nature of work anticipated.
Illustrative Project Areas
These examples are indicative rather than exhaustive. The confirmed Scope of Work will be refined post-selection.
Financial Process Automation
This is likely to be the highest-priority work area. Example projects may include:
- Automating invoice and reimbursement reviews
- Automating the creation of monthly financial reports from source data
- Automating salary payment reviews and reconciliations
- Building structured pipelines that take raw data inputs and produce formatted, audit-ready outputs
Work in this area is expected to meaningfully reduce manual effort and produce durable, documented systems — not one-off scripts.
Management Information Systems Architecture
Example projects may include:
- Redesigning grant coding and tracking frameworks
- Developing financial dashboards (e.g., funding runway, burn rate, grant utilisation)
- Building data structures that cleanly separate inputs, processing logic, and outputs
This work is expected to result in clear architectural improvements, implementation, and durable documentation — not simply recommendations.
Financial Modelling & Forecasting
Example projects may include:
- Building or refining a multi-year, multi-entity, multi-currency financial model
- Developing structured scenario and sensitivity analysis tools
- Designing cash flow forecasting frameworks
- Building funding runway and strategic planning dashboards
Models are expected to be robust, decision-useful, and transferable to internal ownership.
Working Structure
This engagement will be structured around defined projects and milestone-based outputs.
The consultant will work closely with the CEO, COO, and finance team for data access and iteration, but will not hold ongoing operational responsibility.
We are looking for someone who can independently take ambiguous inputs, define the architecture of a solution, and execute it to a high standard.
Ideal Profile
This role will suit someone who is, first and foremost, a systems thinker and data builder. We are not looking for a finance specialist who uses spreadsheets. We are looking for a data professional who understands finance well enough to build the right systems.
Must-Have
- Strong structural and systems thinking — ability to map inputs, processes, and outputs before building
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and/or Google Sheets, including complex formulas, structured data modelling, and automation
- Solid working knowledge of financial statements, management accounts, and grant/donor reporting — sufficient to architect systems around them
- Comfortable working independently as an individual contributor with minimal hand-holding
- Strong problem-solving ability; organised and efficient
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with AI-assisted workflows, scripting (Python, Apps Script, or similar), or data pipeline tools
- Prior experience building financial models used for strategic decision-making
- Background in nonprofit, international development, or multi-donor environments
- CA, CFA, MBA Finance, or equivalent — valued but not required if the systems and data skills are strong
Application Process
Interested applicants should write to our COO with their CV and a short email outlining their specific fit for this role — in particular, an example of a data system or model they have built and what problem it solved.
