    The Role

We are looking for a warm and dependable Aftercare Teacher to work with our preschool and early elementary children. You will take responsibility for their care and supervision at the end of the formal school day, while creating activities and routines that help the group feel settled and happy.

As a bilingual school, we would be particularly pleased to hear from someone who can use Mandarin naturally with children through play, stories, songs and everyday conversation. Mandarin is highly desirable, but we also welcome strong aftercare teachers who are excited to work in a bilingual school.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Welcome children at the end of the school day, build strong relationships with them and help create a calm and happy aftercare environment.
    • Supervise children actively, maintain required ratios and follow all school and licensing procedures.
    • Plan and lead a range of age-appropriate activities, including art, construction, imaginative play, games, stories, music, movement and outdoor play.
    • Support our bilingual environment and, where possible, use Mandarin naturally throughout the afternoon.
    • Help children move smoothly from classrooms and enrichment activities into

aftercare and support them with their belongings and routines.

    • Prepare and serve snacks safely, following allergy and hygiene procedures.
    • Keep accurate attendance and sign-in/sign-out records, and release children only to authorized adults.
    • Help children work through friendship issues and conflict in a calm and age-appropriate way.
    • Support children’s independence with handwashing, restroom routines, tidying and caring for shared spaces.
    • Communicate clearly with colleagues and families about the children’s afternoon, including any injuries, incidents or concerns.
    • Set up and clean program areas, take care of materials and leave spaces ready for the next day.
    • Follow all safeguarding, mandated reporting, emergency, confidentiality, health and safety procedures.

    Required Qualifications

    • Experience working with preschool or early elementary children and a genuine enjoyment of being with them.
    • At least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.
    • Ability to complete all required background clearances, TB screening, health requirements and school onboarding.
    • Reliability, good judgment and the ability to remain calm and attentive in a busy setting.
    • Clear spoken and written English for communication, teamwork, documentation and emergencies.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Confidence speaking Mandarin with young children is highly desirable.
    • Experience in a bilingual, immersion, inquiry-based or independent school setting.
    • An interest or skill you can bring to aftercare, such as art, music, movement, outdoor play, games or storytelling.
    • An understanding of young children’s social and emotional needs and a positive approach to behavior guidance.
    • Six completed California early childhood education units or child development are a plus, but we also welcome candidates who are willing to work toward them.
    • Current pediatric First Aid and CPR certification is a plus, or willingness to obtain it within the school’s required timeframe.

    Why Join Hiba

We will support you with onboarding and ongoing professional learning, and we want you to bring your own interests and ideas to the program.
