    Description

The Philosophy of Social Justice Course is a core component of Legal Outreach’s College Bound program, a rigorous academic opportunity that prepares students for admission into and success at competitive colleges and universities. This college-level Philosophy course introduces rising high school seniors to philosophical theories and their application to the social justice issues of today. In the first part of the course, students will learn foundational philosophical theories from Plato, Locke, Rousseau, and Marx while also familiarizing themselves with methods of philosophical writing. Students will also read from contemporary philosophers, politicians and activists to better understand the critics of social injustice. During the second half of the course, students will apply the theories and arguments discussed in the first half to current issues of inequality.

We are seeking a Philosophy instructor with experience teaching at the college level who can set high expectations for and inspire youth from under-resourced communities. The pedagogical aim of the course is to prepare rising seniors for the transition into college by exposing them to college-level instruction. It will take place from June 29th to July 31st at the Legal Outreach office from Monday to Thursday.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Attend paid orientation at an agreed upon time in early June.
    • Develop course syllabus that meets goals and objectives of the program
    • Teach two sections of the same course to approximately 50 students (appx 25-27 students per section); each class is 90 minutes long.
    • Attend a weekly staff meeting.
    • Provide Office Hours for students directly after classes
    • Provide formal, edited feedback on work.
    • Provide end-of-summer evaluations of students and program

Commit to attend each class, Monday - Thursday 9:00am-12:30pm from June 29th to July 31st 2026 and host office hours directly after from 12:30 - 1:30. Please do not apply if you cannot teach each class on these dates and times.

Curriculum: While Legal Outreach does have previously-used course packets, the instructor is provided the opportunity to choose appropriate material and design a corresponding syllabus. Final approval from Legal Outreach is required.

    Benefits

a $2,000 bonus upon completion of final grading and student evaluations.
