    Description

    About Us

Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology (LASST) is a small team of dedicated professionals who use legal advocacy to make advances in science and technology safer for people and the planet. We believe that preventing man-made pandemics, AI-induced catastrophes, or other global calamities resulting from unsafe or misused science and technology is vital to empowering people everywhere to live fulfilling lives. We are a fully remote team with employees and contractors across multiple states.

Started in 2024, Legal Advocates for Safe Science (LASST) is a rapidly evolving organization. After a successful launch of our Fellowship program, we are excited to host two summer interns for Summer 2027.

    How You’ll Make a Difference

As a Summer Fellow, you will help drive LASST’s mission forward by conducting essential research on merging legal and regulatory issues concerning advanced science and technology. You will work closely with our legal team to investigate potential advocacy targets, analyze relevant statutes and case law, and synthesize complex scientific and technological information into actionable legal strategies. Your work will directly inform LASST's campaigns and litigation efforts, ensuring that our interventions are grounded in rigorous analysis and contribute meaningfully to the safe and responsible development of technologies that impact global well-being.

    About the Summer Fellowship Program

The LASST Summer Fellowship is a 10-week program designed for exceptional law students or recent law school graduates with a strong interest in technology law and global catastrophic risk prevention. We will also consider practicing attorneys who are looking to transition into this type of work. Fellows are embedded within our legal team and receive direct mentorship from our experienced attorneys.

    Key Program Components:

    • Applied Research: Fellows will conduct research projects that directly support ongoing or planned LASST initiatives, focusing on areas such as biotechnology regulation and AI governance.
    • Strategy Development: Fellows participate in strategy meetings, contributing their research and analysis to shape LASST's advocacy agenda, including potential litigation strategies.
    • Professional Development: Fellows will also have opportunities to attend external briefings or conferences. LASST will also host an in-person co-working session in New York City or Washington, DC for all staff and fellows during the summer.
    • Deliverables: Each fellow will be expected to produce one major piece of work product by the end of the term, such as a white paper or legal research memo, intended for external use or internal strategy development.

    Who We’re Looking For

    Essential

    • Incoming 2Ls or higher, including recent graduates and practicing attorneys
    • Ability and willingness to think outside the box and be creative in pursuit of a mission
    • Flexible, collaborative, and proactive
    • Self-starter
    • Able to work with a small, collaborative team and also operate independently

    Preferable

    • Demonstrated interest in topics related to biosecurity, AI safety, or science/tech policy
    • Experience with Google and Microsoft Suites, LexisNexis, Asana, and Slack

    More Information

Fellows are expected to work 40-hour workweeks and will be paid as employees with an annual salary of $70,000 pro-rated for the time they spend at LASST.

LASST is a completely remote workplace. Fellows can work remotely from anywhere in the United States. We will also consider fellows based outside the US as long as they can work overlapping hours with US East Coast time and hold US legal credentials (J.D. candidate, J.D. or state bar membership) and are legally authorized to work in the US.

The role is expected to travel at least twice during the summer.

The fellowship is anticipated to run from June 7, 2027 - August 13, 2027, though this is flexible.

Work authorization: Unfortunately, LASST cannot sponsor visas for fellows.
