    Description

    Part‑Time Staff Attorney (Brooklyn, NY)

    The Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) is a Brooklyn‑based nonprofit law firm advancing gender, racial, and economic justice. We represent low‑income individuals facing discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, and we pursue systemic change through every case we bring. Our core focus areas include pregnancy and caregiver discrimination, sexual harassment and violence prevention, and LGBTQ+ rights. Most matters involve intersecting forms of bias, including race, national origin, immigration status, and disability.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Client counseling and trauma‑informed communication
    • Drafting and litigating administrative complaints
    • Drafting state and federal court pleadings
    • Handling discovery, including depositions
    • Drafting and responding to substantive motions
    • Representing clients in mediations and settlement conferences
    • Litigation across employment, education, housing, public accommodations, and health‑care discrimination matters

    Required Qualifications

    • Admission to the New York State Bar
    • 4+ years of legal experience
    • Background in civil rights or employment discrimination
    • Strong research and writing skills
    • Commitment to impact‑driven gender justice advocacy
    • Ability to work with clients who may have experienced trauma
    • Comfort with taking initiative and working independently with collegial support;
    • Collaborative work ethic; small‑team environment
    • Spanish fluency preferred but not required

    Compensation & Benefits

    • $43,000–$45,000/year for 20–25 hours/week
    • Pro‑rated health insurance stipend
    • Pro-rated PTO - including vacation days, sick and persona time off and applicable federal holidays
    • Payment of bar memberships and conference fees
    • Hybrid work arrangement

    Benefits

    Level of Language Proficiency

    Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not mandatory
