    Description

Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees (HWHR) is a Black, women and nonbinary-led grassroots organization based in Brooklyn, New York, led by and for Haitian refugees. Since 1992, we have organized alongside directly impacted community members, including many who now make up our staff and leadership, to fight for justice, dignity, and the right to live free from state violence. Our work confronts anti-Black immigration policies, defends critical protections like Temporary Protected Status (TPS), resists deportations, and addresses the root causes of displacement such as U.S. imperialism and political violence in Haiti. We center working-class Haitian refugees, undocumented people, and survivors of gender-based violence. Through political education, legal advocacy, healing justice, cultural work, language justice, and direct action, we build collective power so our communities can stay, thrive, and lead the fight for transformative change.

    Position Summary:

HWHR seeks a passionate and strategic Communications Manager to lead our public-facing communications and digital organizing efforts. This full-time role is ideal for a person with strong writing, storytelling, and social media skills who understands the importance of community-led advocacy and intersectional Black liberation work with a transnational anti-imperialist lens. You will help shape our voice, amplify our campaigns, and keep our community informed and engaged. We are looking for someone who will keep abreast of the Black immigrant justice ecosystem and the work of Haitian-led community-based organizations in New York to ensure our messaging is timely, grounded, and connected to broader movement efforts.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Communications (Approx. 65%)

    • Maintain, expand, and refine the existing communications editorial calendar to reflect evolving organizational priorities and campaigns.
    • Draft and edit external communications including newsletters, press releases, social media content, funder updates, and organizational announcements.
    • Manage and grow HWHR’s presence across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and email (Mailchimp).
    • Collaborate with program staff to gather and uplift member stories and campaigns through culturally grounded, multilingual content.
    • Support media relations, including updating media lists, writing talking points, coordinating interviews, and responding to press inquiries.
    • Create or manage the creation of branded graphics and promotional materials for events, campaigns, and organizational initiatives via Canva and related design tools.
    • Maintain the organization’s communications archives and ensure message consistency across platforms.
    • Track engagement metrics and adjust strategies to increase reach and impact.
    • Explore strategy and implementation plans with the Executive Director for consistent use of additional platforms like Whatsapp and Youtube to reach more community members.

    Digital Organizing (Approx. 20%)

    • Design and implement digital strategies that mobilize supporters and amplify grassroots campaigns.
    • Coordinate online actions such as petitions, social media campaigns, rapid response activations, and virtual events.
    • Use digital platforms to connect directly with members and allies.
    • Translate on-the-ground organizing into digital storytelling and calls to action.
    • Collaborate with the team to ensure alignment between in-person and online movement-building efforts.
    • Stay current on digital organizing and communications trends and tools that can strengthen our community reach and effectiveness.

    Branding (Approx. 15%)

    • Strengthen branding and visual identity on all external communications.
    • Lead website refresh with bilingual logo redesign and updated boilerplate language through collaboration with the Executive Director and team.
    • Liaise with designer and website developer for website redesign.

    • Familiarity with racial justice, immigration policy, and Haitian community issues is strongly preferred.
    • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
    • 3+ years of experience in communications, digital organizing, or nonprofit storytelling (experience with immigrant justice or Black-led grassroots groups is a plus).
    • Commitment to HWHR’s values of popular education, Black liberation, and self-determination.
