    Description

    United States of Care (USofCare) is a non-partisan non-profit organization on a mission to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income. We champion fair and commonsense policy changes to meet people’s urgent needs: the certainty that their health care will be affordable, that their coverage will be dependable and there when they need it, that their health care is personalized, and that the system is easy to understand and navigate.

    In order to achieve our people-centered mission, USofCare has developed highly intentional organizational values and we are committed to building a diverse team at all levels of our organization, cultivating an inclusive culture, and engaging with people who bring different perspectives and lived experiences to our efforts. Our values are how we work internally and externally, what we hold up and celebrate, and what we are constantly striving for and aspiring to be as an organization. In building our team, at every level we value and prioritize inclusion and diverse perspectives. Seeking unity over uniformity, we pay attention to the diverse interests, abilities, needs, and backgrounds of every employee and strive to create an environment where everyone is heard and feels that they belong. We strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and communities to apply to join our growing team.

    Position Overview and Responsibilities

    United States of Care is seeking an Operations & Human Resources Assistant to join our team of passionate, adaptable, accountable, innovative problem-solvers dedicated to making our health care system better for all people.

    This role is the connective tissue of USofCare’s day-to-day operations. Reporting to the Director of Operations & Human Resources, the Operations & HR Assistant keeps the organization running smoothly, supporting virtual office management, bookkeeping, compliance, scheduling, events, and core HR processes across the whole organization. If you’re someone who finds satisfaction in building reliable systems, catching the details others miss, and being the person colleagues can count on when they need help navigating tools, policies, or logistics, this role is a strong fit.

    On a given week, you might coordinate with our external accounting firm to manage expense tracking and monthly financial close, process accounts payable through Bill.com, answer staff questions about benefits or onboarding, update personnel records, and help plan an all-staff meeting. You’ll serve as a conduit between the Development and Operations teams to keep financial data reconciled across systems, track employee timesheets and lobbying expenditures for compliance reporting, and maintain the vendor relationships and organizational subscriptions that keep the office running.

    The HR side of this role is meaningful. You’ll assist with onboarding and offboarding, maintain confidential personnel files with discretion, and be the first point of contact for routine staff questions about policies and benefits, escalating anything complex or sensitive to the Director. You’ll also support events and office logistics for DC-area gatherings as needed, and pitch in on special organizational projects that touch operations, research, or planning.

    This is a role where no two weeks look exactly the same. The work requires someone who can balance recurring responsibilities with new requests, communicate proactively about where things stand, and bring genuine curiosity to systems and processes they haven’t encountered before.

    Qualifications

    To be successful in this role, you must have a strong commitment to ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, and have a dedication to operating in a diverse, bipartisan, learning atmosphere that explores multiple policy solutions to achieve our mission. You are willing to respect different points of view, and are committed to applying an equity lens and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in all of your work.

    We’re looking for someone early in their career who is organized, detail-oriented, and eager to grow in an operations and/or HR function within a mission-driven organization. Previous experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is a plus.

    Successful candidates will bring:

    • At least one year of professional administrative experience in operations, office management, bookkeeping, human resources, or a similar function, internships count toward this requirement;
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and PowerPoint or Google Slides; familiarity with bookkeeping or accounts payable systems like Intacct or Bill.com, HRIS platforms, or the broader Google Workspace and Microsoft Office suites is helpful, and willingness to learn them quickly is essential;
    • Comfort working with numbers and financial records, with excellent attention to detail and a track record of accurate, careful work, the kind of accuracy that other people’s work depends on;
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, with clear communication about where things stand;
    • Discretion and good judgment when handling confidential information, including personnel records and benefits administration;
    • Curiosity and flexibility: a genuine interest in learning new systems, comfort with ambiguity, and a creative approach to problem solving.

    Candidates must be located in the Washington, DC metro area and able to commute in as needed.
