    Description

    About Mother's Outreach Network

Mother's Outreach Network (MON) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization rooted in racial justice and economic equity. We partner with, organize alongside, and work with Black mothers navigating the family policing system — primarily in Wards 7 and 8 — through direct legal representation, guaranteed income advocacy, and mother-led policy work. MON operates from the conviction that poverty is not neglect, and that every family deserves the tools to stay together and thrive. We are in an active period of organizational growth, building the internal infrastructure to match the scale of our ambition.

    Position Summary

MON seeks its inaugural Chief of Staff to serve as a trusted operational and strategic partner to the Executive Director. This is a high-responsibility, high-autonomy role for a mission-aligned professional who is a self-directed operator — someone who can absorb organizational context quickly, act decisively without close supervision, and meaningfully reduce the Executive Director’s administrative and operational load. Neither strategic thinking nor operational execution alone is sufficient for this role; the ideal candidate brings both in equal measure. The Chief of Staff acts on behalf of the Executive Director only when explicitly authorized to do so.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director and works across all program, development, legal, and communications functions.

    Core Responsibilities

    Executive Partnership

    • Serve as a primary buffer between the Executive Director and day-to-day operational demands, independently resolving issues and managing workflows that do not require ED involvement
    • Manage the Executive Director’s priorities, calendar, and information flow to maximize strategic focus
    • Prepare briefings, talking points, correspondence, and decision-support materials for the ED
    • Anticipate organizational needs and proactively surface issues, risks, and opportunities

    Operations & Organizational Management

    • Oversee and continuously improve MON’s internal operational systems, including HR, compliance, vendor management, and contractor onboarding
    • Lead cross-functional project management, ensuring deliverables are met on time and within budget
    • Maintain accountability structures across staff, consultants, and contractors

    Board & External Relations

    • Support Board meeting preparation, documentation, and follow-through
    • Manage key external relationships and partnerships in coordination with and under the explicit direction of the ED
    • Represent MON professionally in external settings as directed

    People & Culture

    • Support hiring processes, onboarding, and staff development in partnership with the ED
    • Foster an internal culture consistent with MON’s values of dignity, self-determination, and community accountability

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Minimum 7 years of progressive professional experience, including at least 2 years in an operational leadership or chief of staff role
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder organizations or teams
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong project management skills with high attention to detail and follow-through
    • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and sound judgment in a fast-moving, founder-led environment
    • Deep commitment to racial justice, economic equity, and the rights of Black families
    • Proficiency in standard productivity and project management tools

    Preferred

    • Experience working in or alongside nonprofit organizations, advocacy organizations, or legal services providers
    • Familiarity with DC’s family policing system, child welfare policy, or economic justice landscape
    • Experience as a primary operational deputy to a founder or sole executive, with a track record of reducing executive workload without sacrificing quality or accountability
    • Proximity to or rootedness in Washington, DC’s Ward 7 or Ward 8 communities
