What You Will Do
The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of Healthier Generation’s finance and accounting functions. The Controller is accountable for budgeting, financial reporting, audits, compliance, internal controls, cash management, grant financial management, and other financial operations that support the organization's mission. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, this hands-on role oversees an outsourced accounting partner and Grants Budget Analyst.
Financial Reporting & Budget Management
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports for leadership and the Board.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor organizational performance against budget, including variance and trend analysis.
- Oversee grant financial management, including budgeting, reporting, compliance, and monitoring of funding requirements.
Accounting Operations & Internal Controls
- Review and approve financial transactions, including expense reports, invoices, journal entries, payroll transactions, and other accounting activities to ensure accuracy, proper coding, and compliance with policies.
- Monitor and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, general ledger activities, and account reconciliations to ensure the integrity of financial records.
- Oversee the outsourced accounting partner and ensure timely, accurate execution of accounting activities and monthly and annual close processes.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, financial procedures, and risk management practices.
Audit & Compliance
- Lead the annual financial audit, serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Manage relationships with auditors, banks, outsourced accounting providers, and other partners.
- Provide financial guidance and support to staff and organizational leaders.
- Identify and implement improvements to financial processes, systems, controls, and reporting to strengthen compliance, reduce risk, improve efficiency, and support effective organizational decision-making.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- CPA certification and/or Master's degree strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience in a nonprofit environment.
- Experience managing general ledger activities, financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, and audit preparation.
- Experience supporting annual budgeting and forecasting.
- Experience with grant-funded organizations, fund accounting, activity-based accounting, job cost coding, or similar methodologies required.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, financial compliance, and audit requirements.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems; experience with Sage, BILL, and Concur strongly preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas, and financial reporting tools.
- Experience optimizing financial systems and automated reporting tools to improve efficiency and decision-making.
- Experience supervising and developing accounting or finance staff preferred.
- Experience managing outsourced accounting providers, external accounting firms, or third-party financial service partners preferred.

- Ability to proactively identify issues, recommend solutions, and implement process improvements.

At Healthier Generation, each position is aligned with a salary grade determined by market data. For this position, the salary range is $96,000–$144,000.
