Communications Manager Job Description
The Communications Manager position is a full-time, remote (work from home) exempt staff position. Candidates must be based in California or the Washington DC Metropolitan Area.

Reports To: Executive Director
Consults With: All levels of staff and management
Overall Responsibility: The Communications Manager will develop and implement Consumer Action’s external communications strategy, including the drafting of publications and newsletters, social media posts, website content, and media relations.
Supervises: No supervisory duties.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Manage Consumer Action’s digital and social media presence.
- Write, edit, revise and update consumer education publications, newsletters, media releases, consumer alerts, and website content.
- Develop, draft and edit curricula and other training materials.
- Assist in drafting action alerts, comments to regulatory agencies, and legislative summaries.
- Proofread a variety of materials, including letters, newsletters, publication summaries, and website content.
- Research consumer issues, laws and regulations for consumer education publications.
- Assist in drafting and editing external communications including annual reports, event invitations, meeting agendas, fundraising letters of inquiry, grant proposals, etc.
- Maintain Consumer Action style guide.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in organizational communications/public relations in a nonprofit environment.
- Demonstrated ability to write and edit diverse types of communications, including press releases, newsletters, and consumer education brochures.
- Knowledge and experience in social media across all platforms.
- Attention to detail and ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects to meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of consumer services and products, including those in the banking, credit, insurance and telecommunications industries.
- Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) stylebook and Consumer Action stylebook.
- Strong research skills.
- Strong project management and strategic planning skills.
- Ability to quickly master complex and unfamiliar subjects.
- Excellent, detailed working knowledge of the Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn software employed by Consumer Action, including:
- HTML and web editing
- Layout or graphic design programs
- Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
- Positive, cooperative disposition and ability to work supportively with colleagues.
