    Description

    About The Share Trust

The Share Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community-driven collective action around the world. We believe that people should have the power to shape their own communities. Yet, today, only a small fraction of international aid reaches the local actors who are leading the change they want to see.

To address this systemic imbalance, The Share Trust takes a holistic, ecosystem-based approach—working to shift power, processes, and funding directly to local actors. We do this through two primary areas of focus:

The first area focuses on research and advocacy for localization. We conduct rigorous research on localization strategies—examining cost-efficiency, effectiveness, and impact—to strengthen the evidence base. We also collaborate with bilateral donors, INGOs, and local actors to lead advocacy campaigns, offer thought leadership, and develop tools and frameworks that aim to fundamentally transform how international assistance is designed and delivered.

The second area strengthens the sector of Global South intermediaries who are positioned to receive more significant power and funding. Much of this is achieved in deep partnership with Warande, based in Nairobi. Key intermediaries include:

    • Local Coalition Accelerators (LCAs) – A flagship initiative of The Share Trust and Warande—currently operating in Uganda, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. LCAs provide both financial and technical support to coalitions over a three-year (or longer) period to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability.
    • Self-Help Groups (SHGs) - One of the most evidence-based and cost-effective models for advancing community-driven development. These groups—typically composed of 10–25 members—meet weekly to save, launch small enterprises, and support one another. They harness the transformative power of collective action to generate extraordinary local impact.
    • Alternative Pooled Funds – An emerging collaborative funding mechanism designed to channel more resources directly to local actors in both humanitarian and development contexts.
