    Job Summary:

    The Mayfair Coordinator is part of SOMOS Mayfair programmatic strategy and will work across departments as needed to align programmatic strategy and opportunities. However, the Mayfair Coordinator functions as a community organizer and develops strong organizing campaigns and leadership in the predominantly immigrant community amongst neighborhood residents, youth, and parents with children in the Alum Rock School/East Side Union District. The Mayfair Coordinator works in the SOMOS Mayfair Community Organizing Department, whose purpose is to challenge governmental systems and build grassroots campaigns to end injustice and shift power, norms, and resources back towards the residents of Mayfair and East San Jose.

    The Mayfair Coordinator reports directly to SOMOS Mayfair’s Community Organizing Manager and works alongside a team to develop strategies by people impacted by the issues, build immediate and long-term solutions and foster a spirit of hope and change amongst neighborhood residents, youth, and parents with children. The Mayfair Coordinator will work with the Community Organizing Program Manager to execute organizing strategies that will have an immediate impact on community leadership and create policy change across Mayfair, East San Jose and Santa Clara County. The Coordinator will be responsible for collaborating with regional alliances/partnerships, coalitions, and working with stakeholders, including the Si Se Puede Collective partners to increase community voice, decision making, and advance campaigns.The coordinator is expected to work and steward coalitions and align adult led campaigns to youth organizing campaigns and other intersectional aspects of the work.

    Specifically, this position will focus on coordinating SOMOS Mayfair’s school based strategy and will organize Raza families from the Alum Rock School District/ East Side Union School District to increase opportunities, services and resources so students can lead and thrive.

    This position will organize campaigns impacting but limited to issues around youth resources, academic success, cradle to career and changes in school policies that benefit the needs of multi-generation families through community organizing and policy change. The Coordinator will facilitate discussions to educate families on root causes to education and social injustice and coordinate workshops and meetings to ensure families are organized. Coordinator will work with the organizing team to align campaigns and is expected to lead and sustain campaigns by organizing a robust leadership pipeline.

    Duties and Responsibilities (approximate % of time & priority)

    Leadership Development, Community Organizing & Campaign Coordination (50%)

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive leadership development strategy builds a strong base of leaders, core members, and supporters.
    • Execute community outreach strategies, including one-on-one meetings, home visits, door knocking, phone banking, classroom and group presentations, community meetings, workshops, and community events, to engage Mayfair families, particularly parents of ARUSD students, and move them towards collective action.
    • Conduct ongoing leadership development through mentorship, individualized leadership development plans, political education, and skill-building opportunities that identify community members' strengths, increase their leadership capacity, and remove barriers to participation.
    • Ensure community leaders participate in the Mayfair Popular University (UPM) and other leadership, organizing, and advocacy training that strengthen their ability to lead campaigns and community initiatives.
    • Facilitate organizing meetings, planning sessions, educational workshops, stakeholder meetings, direct actions, mobilizations, and community engagement activities alongside community leaders.
    • Coordinate and implement community organizing campaigns to develop campaign strategies, outreach plans, messaging, educational materials, and communications that advance organizing goals and reflect community priorities.
    • Coordinate organizing efforts across SOMOS Mayfair programs, EMPUJE, Sí Se Puede initiatives, and other organizing teams to ensure alignment in outreach, leadership development, messaging, strategic direction, and campaign implementation.
    • Partner with the Program Manager and Director to develop organizing campaigns, community projects, strategic initiatives, and organizational priorities.
    • Support leaders and community members in conflict resolution, collaborative problem-solving, and effective decision-making while fostering a healthy and accountable organizing culture.
    • Coordinate the logistics for organizing activities and events, including meeting spaces, childcare, food, materials, volunteers, and contractor support to ensure successful implementation.
    • Supervise, coach, and provide ongoing support and performance feedback to assigned volunteers, community leaders, interns, and contractors.
    • Perform other duties as assigned in support of SOMOS Mayfair's mission and community organizing priorities.

    Policy Support, Community Engagement & Advocacy (10%)

    • Support the research and analysis of policy issues, legislation, and ballot measures that impact the community under the guidance of the Program Manager.
    • Assist in developing educational materials, workshops, and outreach tools that help community members understand public policy issues, ballot measures, and opportunities for civic engagement.
    • Engage community members and leaders to identify community priorities and ensure their lived experiences inform policy recommendations, advocacy efforts, and campaign strategies.
    • Coordinate and lead community organizing campaigns that mobilize residents to support the development, passage, amendment, implementation, or defeat of public policies, local initiatives, and ballot measures that advance community priorities and organizational goals.
    • Organize community meetings, outreach activities, educational forums, public actions, and voter engagement efforts that increase community participation in policy and ballot measure campaigns.
    • Support the coordination of meetings and feedback sessions with community leaders, partners, staff, and other stakeholders to strengthen policy proposals, advocacy strategies, and ballot measure campaigns.
    • Encourage and support community leaders in serving as advocates, educators, and spokespersons on community-developed policy priorities and ballot measures.
    • Track policy, advocacy, and ballot measure activities and provide regular updates during staff meetings, team meetings, and community gatherings.

    Coalition Building, Partnerships & Regional Advocacy (10%)

    • Represent SOMOS Mayfair, alongside community leaders, at meetings with community partners, public agencies, coalitions, and other external stakeholders.
    • Foster authentic community participation by ensuring coalition partners engage community members in shared decision-making, planning, and campaign implementation.
    • Participate in and support local, regional, and statewide coalitions, advocacy efforts, and campaigns that advance community priorities and organizational goals.
    • Conduct stakeholder and power analysis with community leaders to identify opportunities for collaboration, build strategic alliances, and navigate differing interests that impact organizing campaigns and community initiatives.

    Program Evaluation, Learning & Continuous Improvement (10%)

    • Utilize program evaluation tools to measure participant engagement, leadership development, and overall program impact.
    • Collect, enter, and maintain accurate participant data, surveys, attendance records, and program demographics in organizational data systems.
    • Support the Program Manager in evaluating program outcomes, analyzing data, and identifying opportunities for improvement.
    • Facilitate reflection and planning sessions with community leaders to assess progress, strengthen program effectiveness, and support continuous learning, growth, and long-term community impact

    Organizational Alignment (10%)

    • Engage in advocacy and organizing for the department and organization
    • Connect leaders to our Family Resource Centers resources
    • Conduct assessments and intake forms to support families to meet their needs
    • Implement leadership development model
    • Connect families to ongoing learning opportunities and SOMOS Collective spaces
    • Coordinate closely with other coordinators to support strategic alignment of planning, evaluation, implementation across our organization to uphold our model
    • Always uphold our full SOMOS model and support families and partners to understand this way of working by modeling our integrated approach
    • Seek out opportunities to collaborate to across SOMOS departments and build relationships

    Administrative (10%)

    • Create and execute an annual work plan, that includes organizational strategies and milestone deadlines
    • Execute a Learning & Professional Development Plan to develop or strengthen essential skills and seek opportunities for greater and on-going learning, including community organizing models and the practice of popular education pedagogy
    • Participate in agency wide decision-making arenas and in regular internal political education as needed
    • Contribute to the development of organizational world-view and development of strategic plan
    • Participate in SOMOS Mayfair staff meetings and training and support major organizational campaigns and projects
    • Support in the development of budgets and track expenditures to meet organizational and grant/contract requirements

    Required Qualifications

    • Deep passion and commitment to advancing social justice in immigrant, working class communities;
    • Able to interact well with young children and adults;
    • Experience in public presentation, group facilitation and outreach
    • Oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a broad audience;
    • Experience in community organizing, base building, applying popular education methodology community leadership development or peer-to-peer service delivery models (i.e. Promotor) in working poor, immigrant communities;
    • Bilingual/biliterate Spanish-English (preferred);
    • Computer proficient in Google Workspace, MS Word, Excel, Internet and e-mail;
    • Available to travel and work throughout the week within San José, including nights and weekends (specifically on Thursdays for School Board meetings), as assigned by direct supervisor
    • Comfortable using social media mediums
    • Ability to take critical feedback, course correct and work collaboratively to address challenges
    • Valid California driver’s license and proof of auto insurance required;
    • Fingerprint and background check required
