    The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) is looking for a full time Development and Grants Manager, based in Minneapolis (preferred), Washington D.C, or New York.

    Who are you?

You are an experienced and organized project manager, attentive to detail and able to see the big picture of the institute’s varied portfolio of projects. A good communicator, you enjoy writing and are ready to work collaboratively to shape and submit strong funding proposals and meet grant deliverables and reporting requirements. You play a central role in building relationships among staff and between IATP and the organization’s funders.

Our mission is to work locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm, and trade systems. Our program staff match high-level research and analysis with on-the-ground engagement to bring policy into practice.     The Position:

    The Development & Grants Manager develops the IATP grants and fundraising strategy for the organization, together with the Executive Director and the Development and Communications Manager. The Development & Grants Manager secures philanthropic support and builds lasting partnerships with foundation partners to advance the mission of IATP. The position is central to ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization, managing a defined portfolio of foundation relationships, and overseeing the full grants lifecycle — from prospect research and proposal development to reporting and renewal. The Development and Grants Manager displays a strong understanding of IATP’s mission and program and helps to develop and effectively communicate a clear and compelling case statement to a range of audiences and funders.

    Responsibilities:

    Grants Management

    • Serve as IATP’s point person for the preparation, submission, and management of all foundation grants, including the submission of all grant proposals, reports, and deliverables.
    • Set up the grants calendar and track deliverables to ensure the timely submission of concept notes, LOI, proposals, and reports.
    • Maintain and update grant files and database in SharePoint and Bloomerang.
    • Coordinate with IATP’s program, finance, and communications teams to support successful submission of requests, proposals, and reports.
    • Work with IATP’s Director of Finance and Operations to create the annual budget and track revenue and actuals.
    • Work with IATP’S Director of Finance and Operations to create and report on grant-related budgets.
    • Maintain a list of current and potential financial donors including foundations, individuals, and corporations, using the organization’s CRM (Bloomerang).
    • Research and apply for new grants and public funding.

    Fundraising Strategy and Plan

    • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Development and Communications Manager, program staff, and Director of Finance and Operations to shape development strategy and set annual monetary goals and budgets.
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including grants, donations, and special events in partnership with the Development and Communications Manager and the Executive Director.

    Fundraising Operations

    • Ensure accurate records by logging gifts in a timely manner, processing donation acknowledgments, and updating donor information in the CRM (Bloomerang)
    • Support budget reporting and reconciliation (with finance team).
    • Work with the Finance and Operations Director to prepare reports for the annual audit.
    • Furnish the board and development committee with regular progress reports.

    Marketing and Communications Support

    • Work with the Development and Communications Manager to translate organizational strategies and goals into clear narratives, marketing messages, campaigns, and appeals.
    • Create engaging donor-focused narratives and communication tools in collaboration with the Development and Communications Manager and the program communications team.
    • Define and manage audience segmentation and create compelling messages and materials.

    Preferred Qualities and Qualifications:

    • Understanding of and commitment to IATP’s mission and values.
    • Minimum five years of professional experience in fundraising, development, or grants management in the nonprofit sector. Background in project management and/or related role desirable.
    • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience.
    • Experience in building long-term relationships, and strategic thinking.
    • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles with a focus on foundation grants.
    • Comfortable making a direct ask/invitation for financial support.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a talent for building and sustaining relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to meet deadlines while balancing competing priorities.
    • Excellent written, editing, and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint, and experience with CRM or donor databases (Bloomerang, Salesforce, Blackbaud, DonorPerfect or similar).

    Physical Requirements:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Ability to travel domestically to the Minneapolis office two or four times a year.

    Benefits and Compensation:

    Compensation for this position is based upon qualifications and experience, with a starting range of $55,000 - $70,000.
