    Description

    This role is responsible for managing and overseeing financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting and maintaining compliance with accounting standards. The role cross-functions with a separate but related non-religious 501(c)(3) organization.

    Candidates must be proficient in Blackbaud Financial Edge. The ideal candidate will effectively use the platform’s budgeting and reporting functions, manage liquidity and assist leadership in financial decision making. Experience managing audit processes and work in not-for-profit or arts contexts is a plus.

    The organization’s financial landscape includes restricted and unrestricted contributions, revenue from space use, investment and endowment income, grants and City contracts. It employs clergy and professional staff and engages contractors to support administrative, operational, program and event activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • General Accounting & Financial Reporting
      • Support day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll accounting and bank reconciliations.
      • Coordinate month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, reclasses, accruals, prepaid expenses and account reconciliations.
      • Prepare accurate and timely statements, variance analyses and supporting schedules.
    • Contribution, Revenue & Fund Accounting
      • Record and reconcile unrestricted and restricted contribution revenue.
      • Record earned revenue from space use and assist in tracking and reconciliation.
      • Maintain detailed records of unrestricted and restricted fund activity, ensuring proper revenue recognition and expense allocation.
      • Coordinate with the Development office to reconcile pledges and grant drawdowns.
    • Compliance, Audit & Internal Controls
      • Maintain accounting documentation and financial records in accordance with GAAP, non-profit accounting standards, internal controls and organizational policies.
      • Support annual external audits for both organizations and Form 990/CHAR500 preparation for the non-religious 501(c)(3).
      • Assist in identifying gaps and strengthening accounting processes, internal controls, documentation, reconciliation procedures and overall efficiency.
    • Operations & Administration
      • Prepare payroll and ensure accuracy of all payroll deductions.
      • Produce W-2s and 1099s.
      • Assist in budgeting and forecasting activities.
      • Interface with Paychex PEO on key business operations.
      • Coordinate and oversee work of Finance Assistant and Gifts Administrator.
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Process Improvement
      • Recommend and implement improvements in overall structure and setup of financial organization, including Chart of Accounts, systems, platforms and processes.
      • Collaborate with all staff to ensure data consistency and quality across systems, providing training and guidance as needed.
      • Oversee and drive improvement in Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
      • Work with the Development office on preparing project budgets, processing payments and reimbursements and producing activity reports for grants.

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA certification strongly preferred.
    • Significant accounting experience; management experience preferred.
    • Experience in nonprofit, community, arts and culture organizations.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Proficiency in Blackbaud Financial Edge (Raiser’s Edge and Merchant Services a plus).
    • Proficiency in Google Workspace with advanced skills in Google Sheets.
    • Knowledge of Paychex Flex or similar platform for payroll administration.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
