Gargon Ani Gompa (nunnery)

About Us

This is the winter / Kathmandu satellite residence for Gargon gompa, Muktinath, Mustang.

There are around 50 nuns of various ages from age 6 to 60+. Although close to the ring road, and the famous temple of Swayambhu, the nunnery is located on a hillside above the hamlet of Halchowk, to maintain a suitable environment for tibetan buddhist practice.

The older nuns are from the villages around their home gompa in Mustang, but these days younger nuns are joining from farther flung mountain and hill districts of Nepal. Thus more time is being spent in Kathmandu where it is easier to find and retain teachers and access to health and other basic services.

The nuns were established as a Nyingma gompa, but their current patron is from the Drukpa Kagyu school, and they receive teachers from Tashi Jhong, HP, India for the senior studies.
