The Young Trustees movement was incubated by the Social Change Agency in 2019. It is currently fiscally hosted by Social Change Nest.
Our mission is to:
- Increase the number of trustees aged 30 and under on charity boards across England and Wales by 2024. (while the spotlight is on the age factor, our movement is part of a wider call for diversity on boards).
- Changing the image of what a trustee looks like, by shining a light on the impact made by young trustees.
- Define what conditions allow for safe spaces where all young people can genuinely add their perspectives.
To achieve this, we:
- Run campaigns that challenge the perceptions of who a trustee should be.
- Host a digital hub that enables those in our movement to connect.
- Building the infrastructure to enable current Young Trustees to lead the movement across the UK.
- Working with and signpost existing initiatives working towards our mission.
- Create training and support where there is a gap and a need.
Movement Values:
- Intersectional diversity of perspectives
- Young people are safe & can make informed choices
- Young people lead this movement
- Collaboration
Cultural aspirational values
The heading is the aspirational value, the bullet points are the choice that enables those things to be actioned. This is a choice we make every day and moment. We call these aspirational values, as we will always get things wrong - what is important is that we are centered in and accountable to these values.
- Empathy & Integrity
- Bringing kindness to ourselves and those we work with. Valuing social justice at the center of all of our decisions. Relationships are better than transactions. Deep-seated change requires networks, allies, and the fresh thinking that comes from working with others.
- Curious & Challenging
- We approach our work with a curious mind and a culture that allows for a constructive challenge, bringing the energy and fun that is needed to inspire others to create change.
- Self-awareness & Nourishment of self and others.
- Asking ourselves: What conditions allow ourselves and others to thrive? Am I in a place to receive, ask for, and be supported in feedback? How can I bring my whole self to work and be playful (what do I need to make this happen?).
