The Upper Valley Haven
The Upper Valley Haven is a private not-for-profit organization, founded in 1981, that provides temporary shelter for homeless families and their children, as well as food, clothing and educational programming to those in need. All Haven services are provided free of charge. Since 1981 the Haven has fostered independence by providing resources through our Shelter Advocacy, Aftercare and Educational programs.
During the first six months of 2009 the Haven provided: - shelter and advocacy for 29 families (on a typical night, 29 people called the Haven “home”), - a week’s worth of food to 7,777 people, which included 2,862 children, an increase of 45% over this time a year ago, - free clothing 2,521 times, a 12% increase, and - tutoring and mentoring for 10-12 homeless youth, and educational programs for their parents.
In order to meet the rapidly increasing need for adult shelter in the Upper Valley region (an area roughly extending from Bradford, VT to Claremont, NH, and from Newbury, NH to Barnard, VT) the Haven is in the process of constructing a new 20-bed shelter for adults without minor children. The project is scheduled to be completed and operating by May, 2010.
Guided by the faith of our founders, we: -welcome all who enter our doors as equals, respecting their dignity and accepting them as best we can without judgment; -encourage those we serve to develop their capacity for independence; -are thrifty with our resources, generous in our hospitality, and responsible to the communities that support us; -welcome all who are willing to join us in loving service to our neighbors.
