NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security
- New York
The NGOWG on Women, Peace and Security advocates for the equal and full participation of women in all efforts to create and maintain international peace and security. Formed in 2000 to call for a Security Council resolution on Women, Peace and Security, the NGOWG now focuses on implementation of all Security Council resolutions that address this issue. The NGOWG serves as a bridge between women's human rights defenders working in conflict-affected situations and policy-makers at U.N. Headquarters. The NGOWG currently has the ofllowing members:
- Amnesty International
- CARE International
- Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights
- Femmes Africa Solidarité
- Global Justice Center
- Human Rights Watch
- Inclusive Security
- International Alert
- Nobel Women's Initiative
- Refugees International
- Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
- Women's Refugee Commission
Other women's peace groups, human rights and humanitarian organizations collaborate with the NGOWG on joint projects and activities. The NGOWG also works closely with UN Women, UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, UN Action to Stop Sexual Violence in Conflict, and Friends of 1325 (a group of member states and UN agencies formed to increase support for the implementation of 1325).
By harnessing NGO members' connections with women's groups from conflict-affected areas, the NGOWG represents a rare and forceful linkage between women in conflict-affected regions and United Nations policy makers. The strength of the NGOWG lies in channeling women's voices and concerns towards the highest levels of international policy making to create broad and meaningful changes that improve their lives.
