Gathering Green

To cultivate in young people a deep sense of identity as stewards of the earth while equipping them with

leadership skills to drive positive change in schools, communities, and society.

Humanity’s relationship with nature has historically been rooted in respect, balance, and shared

responsibility. In Ghana, traditional knowledge systems emphasized care for rivers, forests, and land,

teaching children that humans are part of, not separate from, nature.

Modern life, urbanization, and changing social norms have weakened this intrinsic connection. Many

children grow up disconnected from the natural world, and environmental protection is often seen as

optional or crisis-driven rather than a core value.

At the same time, opportunities for young people to exercise meaningful leadership in schools and

communities are limited. Leadership roles are often symbolic or under-supported, leaving youth

underprepared to influence their communities, initiate projects, or advocate for change.

Gathering Green addresses this dual gap:

1. Nurturing environmental consciousness as part of identity
2. Building leadership skills in children and youth so they can actively initiate, manage, and lead

climate and community projects

Through this integrated approach, young people become not only stewards of the earth but also leaders

who can organize, inspire, and implement positive change.
