The History of Family Reentry

What began in 1984 as a reentry support group for men at the Isaiah House in Bridgeport, has grown to over 15 Intervention, Reentry and Family and Children programs. Services are provided in Bridgeport, Derby, Norwalk, and Stamford and in three prisons in Cheshire and Niantic.

Over the past twenty-five years, effective community-based programs developed by Family ReEntry, have significantly reduced the likelihood that clients will re-offend, be re-arrested, or be re-incarcerated. FRE addresses the specific needs of each client and their families through individualized case management and support services. We offer intensive, integrated program plans for those in need of either single or multiple services.

Governed by a Board of Directors that meets eight times a year, FRE strives to meet the needs of the community. FRE’s Executive Director leads a Senior Management team consisting of: Director of Finance, Director of Development and Communications, Director of Contracts and Program Administration, and Manager of Administration and Human Resources. There are 29 full time paid staff and 11 part time paid staff. In addition to paid staff, there is a team of 180 volunteers agency-wide, who provided over 6,400 hours of their time last year through mentoring opportunities, providing job training, administrative tasks, and special events.

During our fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, Family ReEntry served over 2,000 clients and this year we will serve approximately 2,250 men, women, and youth agency-wide. Most clients are referred by the criminal justice system while on probation, pre-trial, on parole, or in prison. Others find us through local agencies, the school system, or through word of mouth. Ninety-four percent of our clients are below low income levels. Our agency demographics, include forty percent of our clients who are African American and twenty-six percent are Hispanic; several of our programs are made available to clients in Spanish-language versions.
