About Us

The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio is a community of women religious of different ages with diverse gifts and talents, from many countries and cultures. We are united in the call to live the mission of Jesus, and are committed to live that call in community. To be a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word means to be sent to love as Jesus does—to make present in the world his compassionate and merciful love, and, to recognize and celebrate the many ways this love is already present around us.

We are called first and foremost to see God in every person we meet and to respond to need as we find it. As a result, our ministries are many and diverse. Our Sisters serve as teachers and administrators at all levels of education. We are nurses and administrators in health care systems. We work to empower women and children and the elderly to meet the changing needs in their lives and the demands of society. We walk with developing peoples, mentoring them toward health and self-sufficiency. We are artists and musicians, manifesting God’s beauty.

Our Sisters live and work in Texas, Missouri, Washington, Michigan, Louisiana and Illinois. In Mexico, we are present in Chihuahua, Puebla, Monterrey, Torreon, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, San Luis Potosi, Guadalajara, Cuernavaca, Chiapas, Queretaro, and Chapantongo. We minister in Lima, Chimbote, and Puno, Peru, in Mongu, Zambia and in Ireland.

Throughout the life and work of the Congregation, from the very beginning, we have advocated on behalf of justice and peace, as individuals, as communities, as Congregation, working singly and collaboratively, through our ministries and personal lives, alone and corporately.

Corporate and institutional decisions have significant impacts. Personal actions and the daily choices we make also impact the world around us. We begin in contemplative prayer; we become peaceful women-within, and with one another. We seek to work on behalf of peace, through acts of justice.
