The City Tutors

The City Tutors (CT) is an organization that seeks to provide trained volunteer tutors and tailored academic programming to departments in an effort to support retention of at-risk students, a majority of whom come from underprivileged backgrounds.

The City Tutors (CT) was founded in 2013 by students and faculty interested in directly tackling the low retention rates at schools and in preparing students for life after college, using tutoring as a vehicle to accomplish both goals. School departments gain trained tutors and tailored programming that assists in supporting their at risk populations; tutors in return gain professional experience, and access to long term professional development. A win-win model that benefits the school ultimately.

We are currently partnered with City College’s College Now, a CUNY wide program that provides high school students the opportunity to take college classes for college credit; Black Male Initiative RAPSI (Retention, Achievement, Professionalism Success Institute), which mentors and provides tutoring for minority students at risk of dropping out; and Manhattan International High School, which serves students who have been in the country for five or less years. City Tutors seeks to closely collaborate with departments/institution to ensure that at-risk students are identified early, and provided a learning plan that supports their classroom instruction with individualized tutorials and a portfolio of themed workshops that stress critical and analytical development.
Additionally, CT seeks to provide its tutors and instructors the opportunity to grow as professionals by helping them to develop and refine their teaching, tutoring and curriculum development skills; giving them access to the CT network; and providing support with their job/internship/scholarship search, professional document (cover letter, resume, personal statement) development and with their interviewing preparation. Each tutor receives a professional case manager who will
work with you to build/strengthen your resume, help you in your exploration of professional interests, and develop with you a plan to achieve professional goals you set out.
