The Ottawa Rape Crisis Center
The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC) is recruiting volunteers for the Crisis Line
About the ORCC:
The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre is a pro-active, anti-racist, feminist organization. We counsel and support women, educate for change and work to create a safe and equitable community. Through education, empowerment and respect the ORCC serves to rally voices in the community around the issues of sexual violence and feminism. This may include: sexual assault, rape, childhood sexual assault/abuse, incest, sexual harassment and ritualized abuse. We also provide services to family, friends, and partners/spouses of women who have been sexually assaulted.
The volunteer-run crisis line provides service 24-hours, 7 days a week to survivors of sexual violence, supporters, and family and friends of survivors. The crisis line volunteer counsellors provide crisis intervention on issues such as: childhood sexual abuse, recent sexual assault, flashbacks and suicide intervention. In addition, counsellors provide information on community resources and services, and accompaniment to police stations and to the Sexual Assault Partner Care program at the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital.
The crisis line program provides continuous professional development training for its volunteers, on topics such as vicarious trauma, addictions, mental illness, self-harm, and self-care, and explores different treatment modalities. Crisis line counsellors also receive support and supervision on their work on the crisis line.
