Qolora Education Centre

The Qolora Education Centre is a registered Non Profit Organisation in a remote, rural village, Eastern Cape South Africa.

We place international volunteer English teachers at 2 surrounding junior schools where our focus is to improve student's English.  We need volunteers to do one-on-one reading with young students (age 7 to 10) in the morings for a few hours.  Volunteers will be given our easy to follow reading programme which we have had positive results with.  You will not be replacing the role of the teacher in the classroom but by taking students out of their class, you will be supporting the teacher thorugh our litracy programme.

In the afternoons, volunteers will need to give a one hour fun communicative English lesson to junior school students at our education centre.  You will need to be able to draw up your own lesson plan although we will supply you with lots of resources as well as activity ideas for the students.  This is a great opportunity for students to practice their spoken English, as their and the teacher's home language is Xhosa.

We have a library and computers at our centre which need overseeing by volunteers.  High school students visit our centre for assistance with researching school projects, homework, or to apply to universities.

We encourage volunteers to share any other skills they have with the students from sport to crafts.

We can accommodate 4 volunteers at a time in 2 thatched rondavels (roundhouse). We have hot running water and flushing toilets. Volunteers will have lots of free time to explore the village and we enjoy showing off our beautiful, pristine beaches which are 4 km's walking distance away. Volunteers will leave here with a sense of accomplishment and will have learnt all about the intriguing Xhosa culture.

We charge volunteers R1 000 per week as we are a charity. In exchange you will be given 3 meals a day and accommodation. Volunteers love our Western / Xhosa fusion cooking, the relaxed lifestyle, open spaces, beautiful countryside, pristine beaches, delicious seafood, traditional dancing and singing at events and the beaming faces of the eager children.
