Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties, Inc. (Goodwill) is an autonomous not-for-profit social enterprise, founded in 1916. Its mission is to create solutions to poverty through the businesses we operate. Goodwill's commercial enterprises'including eighteen stores in three counties, an online business, and a reuse/recycling operation'provide low-income participants with on-the-job training while funding 85% of the organization's operating budget. Through customized program elements - e.g. Vocational English as a Second Language and other supportive services tailored to program participants 'Goodwill serves multiple populations. In fiscal year 2009, Goodwill served over 4,000 individuals with significant barriers to employment and completed over 700 job placements with an average hourly wage of $14.65.
Goodwill's participants are low-income individuals with significant barriers to employment, including involvement in the criminal justice system, physical and mental disabilities, homelessness, limited English proficiency, and long-term welfare dependence. For the most recently completed fiscal year, Goodwill's participant base was 39% ex-offenders, 18% homeless, 17% individuals with a disability, and 39% on public assistance.
