About Us

WHAT IS WACHO

WACHO is a grassroots movement started in 2019 that has grown to over 32 chapters in various universities in Tanzania and around the world. Our goal is to engage young people in climate activism and help reverse climate change; the biggest crisis of this generation. WACHO is an acronym for World Action on Climate and Health Organization. Thus, WACHO takes an integrated approach to the challenges of climate change and health as not two separate crises, but rather, one complex crisis which is both health and environmental.

OUR MISSION

To promote strategic understanding of the climate change emergency, to reduce its adverse effects on health, to advocate for the poor, and encourage the pursuit of medical progress.

OUR VISION

A healthier world's population that has achieved net zero greenhouse gas emissions and a sustainable future.

OUR MOTTO

"Sustainability for the common good."

EMPOWERING THE YOUNGER GENERATION

WACHO has opened several chapters in universities across Africa. Additionally, we are raising interest among students internationally (Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Australia). We have found that our goals are well-supported by these young adults, who perhaps have the most at stake in this climate emergency. The university student populations are totaling well over 30,000 thus far. We believe that each individual student is a potential node in their network of influence, which will allow us to reach millions. While recognizing the complexity of this issue, WACHO wants to hold accountable inactive leadership and an apathetic population. By rallying students, our future leaders, on college campuses, we demand and influence change on a local (incorporating climate change curriculum into universities), governmental (correcting economic models that disregard the environment), and international (inter-connecting and empowering our student activists) level.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM

Climate change is a fundamentally urgent issue because we only have one home - planet earth. That means there is no planet B. And while everyone is different in their own way, we all share the same earth which, in essence is our home. However, our home is burdened and full of waste. Unfortunately, over the last two hundred years, we have managed to damage and mistreat our common home. Our pace of consumption, unsustainable lifestyles, and inactive leadership have caused a human-induced climate change emergency. Moreover, each and every one of us are paying the price for climate change with our health, and futures. As a result, our planet precipitates pandemics, and catastrophes everyday around different parts of the world, and if we do nothing - we are heading for extinction.
