About Us

In Northern Virginia, our work to advance local climate solutions and protect young people, powered by faith communities and friends who share our values, is getting stronger.

  • FACS has received a Building Up Award from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to continue our work with congregations to lower their carbon footprints.
  • Fairfax County, Virginia, government selected FACS to lead the faith sector pilot program.
  • FACS advocacy pushed Alexandria to establish an Office of Climate Action. In Arlington County, FACS works with community leaders to improve land usage, promote adding green spaces, and minimize urban sprawl. In Loudoun County, our activists focus on data center usage and won approval of a County Environmental and Energy Strategy Plan.

FACS advocates for historically marginalized, immigrant, and low-income senior communities that are most affected by high energy costs and detrimental health effects as higher temperatures become more frequent. We're working with public schools to increase environmental education, install solar and electrify bus fleets, and divert food waste. And we're advocating for conservation and expansion of the existing tree canopy.

Today, we have nearly 3,000 supporters -- not bad for a nonpartisan nonprofit that began as a discussion group in a church basement. With a dynamic board, amazing volunteers, and great leadership, we can continue to build our strength and influence.

The daily Jewish liturgy commands: “Sh’ma” – listen up!" And the Gospel of Matthew likewise implores: “Let anyone with ears listen!” (Mat 11:15). Pope Francis observed: “The Earth, our home, increasingly seems to be transforming itself into an immense garbage dump. The reduction of greenhouse gases requires honesty, courage and responsibility.”

We see this as a moral obligation to protect future generations.
