  • Mission

STEHM is a non-profit organization whose mission is two-fold: 1) to provide long-term transitional housing fostering the goal of independent living through counseling and life skills training in a safe, supportive environment for women and women with children; and 2) through our motel ministry, to provide short-term emergency housing for needy or displaced persons.

    About Us

STEHM is an advocate for affordable housing and provides a necessary service by offering free transitional housing, up to one year, at Martha Houses I and II, which provides a safe, supportive environment to unhoused women and women with children through our Case Management program. Through counseling, workshops, and referral services, STEHM helps families acquire the skills and resources necessary to move towards self-sufficiency. Martha Houses I and II are residences in downtown Wilmington, DE that can house a total of 16 unhoused women and children. Our facilities have private bedrooms and common kitchen, bathroom, and living room areas. We have a Case Management program which operates on a referral basis; potential residents are referred to STEHM by partner agencies and screened for their suitability for the program. This program is designed to address issues that have contributed to resident’s homelessness and to provide the skills they need to lead productive, independent lives.

Also, STEHM operates the Motel Ministry, our first project that was supported by a small grant from the legislature. This ministry continues to provide short-term housing for unhoused men, women, and families in need.
