About Us

The Friends of the Alameda Free Library (FAL) is an all-volunteer organization

dedicated to support the Alameda Free Library. There are 3 main foci:

1. To fund programs and capital projects the library could not otherwise afford. Adult

literacy programs, teen book clubs, family film nights, art docent lectures, cultural

enrichment programs such as Live@theLibrary, new books and media for the library

collection, computer and technology support, and children’s programs are just a few of

the activities FAL supports through financial donations to the Alameda Free Library.

2. To advocate for the Alameda Free Library by building awareness of the many

programs and services available through the library and to engage the community and

elected officials in these activities. Whether it’s donating a book to the annual book sale,

having a cup of coffee at Dewey’s Café, participating in a reading program, watching a

movie with your kids, or listening to jazz, our programs bring people into the library,

expose them to the many services the library offers, and thus ensures the long term

vibrancy of one of Alameda’s most valued resources. Additionally, we advocate for

library funding with local, regional and state elected bodies.

3. To engage the community through volunteerism. As an all-volunteer organization,

community members supplement fundraising by contributing countless hours to help

library programs succeed. Our 100+ volunteers collect, sort, and prepare thousands of
