The EcoTarium was founded in 1825 as the Worcester Lyceum of Natural History (making it the second oldest natural history society in the country) and was incorporated in 1884 as the Worcester Natural History Society — EcoTarium's legal identity. While the name, facility, exhibits and technology have changed, much of the museum's work today continues to reflect the ideologies and practices adopted nearly 200 years ago. After several successful fundraising years, the EcoTarium is uniquely positioned to become a national leader in ecology-based STEM education. Many exciting projects have been completed, such as City Science which opened in 2017, and will be happening, such as Wild Cat Station opening in Spring, 2019. The opportunities for collaboration within Worcester and New England are plentiful, and organizationally we are at an exciting time in our history as we look to celebrate our 200 years in 2025 and bring the organization into our third century.
Located in the heart of the Commonwealth, Worcester is a city of just under 190,000 people, making it the second largest city in New England. The city’s nickname “Heart of the Commonwealth” stems from it’s centralized location in Massachusetts, making it easy to travel to all that the state offers. Established in 1722 the city has a rich history of manufacturing, technology and innovation, and has thrived in recent years tapping into that tradition with an influx of new industry and technologies. The city is home to 9 universities and colleges, and affords an excellent cost of living for a vibrant, centrally located city. With recent development in mind, Worcester has been rated as one of the hottest cities in the nation, as the new “it” town (https://www.npr.org/2018/10/23/658263218/forget-oakland-or-hoboken-worcester-mass-is-the-new-it-town).
