NYC Teaching Residency

About Us

The New York City Teaching Residency program is a NYC Department of Education program that recruits and prepares talented, committed individuals to become effective teachers who dedicate themselves to raising student achievement and driving change as part of a school turnaround strategy in New York City’s lowest performing schools.

Unlike most teacher preparation programs where participants only spend a few weeks in a classroom before becoming full-time teachers, Residents will learn the essentials of great teaching under the guidance of an experience teacher while immersed in a NYC public school community for one school year. Residents also work towards a subsidized master's degree in education through St. John’s University that is tailored to support their immediate work in the classroom and lay the foundation for a career in teaching. Through this school-embedded approach, Residents will gain the skills needed to become effective teachers who are prepared to drive change and turn around the performance of New York City’s lowest performing district public schools.
