  • About Us

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as an independent executive branch agency, and reflects President Truman’s desire, toward the end of his life, not to be honored by a bricks and mortar monument but rather by a living memorial that would act as a catalyst of support for future generations of public servants. The Truman Foundation fulfills that mission by selecting as Truman Scholars, each year, outstanding young people from every state and territory of the United States who are committed to public service leadership. The Foundation supports them with graduate school scholarships, mentoring, and professional development so that they can make a positive difference through public service. Forty years into its work, the Truman Foundation is a beacon that inspires and guides Americans to lead through public service; it is the Presidential memorial to public service. Friends of the Truman Foundation is a support organization for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Friends raises, manages, and disburses support for the operations and activities of the Foundation and its mission.
