At SOLAS Rescue, we believe every animal deserves a second chance and a loving home. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome pets in need while promoting compassion and responsible pet ownership.

Solas Rescue – In the beginning

Solas Rescue was incorporated in 1995 (then known as S.O.L.A.S.—Support Our Local Animal Shelter) to support the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter, which was severely lacking in resources and supplies.

Solas volunteers assisted at the shelter by providing hands-on help, supplying needed medications, and offering ongoing support. Over time, it became clear that some animals required more individualized care than the shelter could provide. This was especially true for vulnerable animals such as newborn kittens and puppies, pregnant animals, and those needing extra medical attention.

In response, Solas began developing a foster care program to ensure these animals could receive the specialized care they needed in a home environment. While today Solas focuses primarily on cats, the organization originally supported both dogs and cats alike.

Solas Rescue starts to foster

As time passed and the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter ceased operations, Solas transitioned to a more traditional foster-based rescue model. The organization expanded its efforts to take in cats from other rescues, as well as strays and owner surrenders from individuals facing difficult or unexpected circumstances.

Solas Rescue Today

Today, more than 30 years later, Solas Rescue is a thriving, cat-focused, all-volunteer organization. Without a physical facility or paid staff, we rely entirely on the dedication of our volunteers and foster homes to carry out our mission.
