Historic Clayborn Temple

Historic Clayborn Temple is a 501(c)3 organization established 2 years ago to preserve over 200 years of history and legacy. The Historic Clayborn Temple team is currently in a building and growing phase. 

There is currently an Executive Director, Board of Directors, and a small team of consultants currently preparing to begin renovations on the building and build new programs including a community engagement process inspired by the work of Dr. King and the Sanitation Workers and aligned with the innovation of storytelling, community building, and wealth-building for African-American communities. 

Our mission is to animate the story of the Clayborn Temple and animate the work of the sanitation workers for race, class, and gender equity. 

Background:  Historic Clayborn Temple is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural and historic significance.  It is considered to have irreplaceable cultural, material and aesthetic value.  The Board of Directors of Historic Clayborn Temple (the Board) is charged with the preservation, restoration and conservation of Historic Clayborn Temple. 

Under a phased restoration program with diverse funding sources including the Department of the Interior National Parks Service, the Tennessee State Historic Preservation Office, local governments and other philanthropic partners, the Board seeks a qualified Historic Preservation Specialist.  All phases of the project are to be completed in accordance and in compliance with The Secretary of the Interior’s “Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties” (Rehabilitation) as administered by the National Park Service.
