American Legion Post #797
The American Legion has many objectives, some of which are carried out nationally, and some locally by a Post within the community. One of the primary objectives of the Legion is the Rehabilitation of the disabled veteran. We also are deeply involved in the Child Welfare program and are assisted in this endeavor by the Ladies Auxiliary Unit of the Post. The Legion also sponsors and selects 1400 young men annually in Ohio to attend Buckeye Boys State, and the Ladies Auxiliary does the same for Buckeye Girls State. These youth gain knowledge of how our government works during their nine-day stay for a mock government program. The Legion also provides testing for Americanism and Government Tests which are conducted locally by the Auxiliary of the Posts. We also provide schools, institutions, and civic and youth groups with information regarding proper display and care of the US Flag. The American Legion Posts provide awards of ROTC medals for military and scholastic excellence. The Sons of the American Legion is organized of male descendants of Legionnaires and veterans. The Legion insures that Americanism and dedication to the United States are practiced at all meetings. The Legion provides a scholarship program for Ohio Legionnaires children annually. Recipients of the awards are selected and announced in May by the Ohio Legion Scholarship Committee. Gifts for Yanks is a program that makes Christmas a more joyous occasion for hospitalized veterans and is carried out each year as a combined effort by the American Legion Posts.Community Service as well as American Legion Baseball are importsnt activities of the Legion, and Post 7907 in Gahanna is deeply involved in these efforts as well as all those mentioned above.
