This practical program is inspired by NIH funded research to discover how healthy people stay healthy. Sensible eating, moderate exercise, sleeping well, and maintaining body weight are all associated with well-being. This confirmed the landmark study conducted in the 1960's by Belloc and Breslow that lifestyle choices count. Yes, a diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsaturated fats, nuts, legumes and low-fat dairy contribute to health, and reduce significantly the risk of many chronic diseases. Eating healthy remains key. And lifestyle impacts how well you will live. Our program started in 1982. The first public workshop introducing the hand as a portion measurer took place on February 6, 1984 for the City of Escondido. We need volunteers to help administer the program learning Circles. Website development, outreach, and many other tasks.
If there was one public health intervention that would reduce premature death, physical ailments, surgery and its complications, and reduce the risk of most chronic diseases it would be for all people to eat properly, exercise moderately, and keep their weight in a healthy range. That's why this Association exists. If we could all do this, fewer hospitals would be built and our health costs would nose-dive. We would all be healthier and happier people.
