CommonCare, a food ministry at St. Peter's Episcopal Church

  • About Us

The CommonCare ministry at St. Peter's Episcopal Church offers community meals that are open to all comers on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from September through June.

    ABOUT US

At each Cook-in, a meal is prepared and served with and to our sisters and brothers from Cambridge as well as from communities throughout eastern Massachusetts.

Normally, each meal includes seven healthy, freshly prepared, and tasty entrees (one meat, four vegetarian, a tossed salad and dessert). Many attendees report that it is the best community meal in Cambridge. The meal is prepared and served by a team of 25 to 35 people (Saint Peter's parishioners, people from the community, and adult and student volunteers) in a cooperative, welcoming and friendly (but busy) atmosphere.

More than 80 people gather at each Cook-in to share in a healthy meal and fellowship. Annually over 2200 meals are served. Alas, anyone involved with CommonCare knows that we are more than a "food program"; we are fellowship that some describe as family.

    JOIN US

It takes many hands to get everything ready on time. We encourage anyone to help us at a Cook-in and volunteer your time to help prepare, serve a meal, or help clean up afterwards.

    SCHEDULE

Below is the schedule of activities.

12:30pm – 2:30pm: Set up space for meal preparation

2:30pm - 5pm: Prepare and cook entrees; set up space for the meal

    5pm - 6pm: Meal and fellowship

    6pm - 7pm: Begin clean up

    VOLUNTEER

You don't have to come for the whole time, so come as your time allows. Many people are able to help out with specific tasks for 2 or 3 hours; others are able to help for longer periods of time. So whether you are able to commit to a short or long period of time, we need your help.

The greatest need for volunteers is during meal preparation and clean-up. If you plan to help with the meal preparation, it would be helpful if you were present for the dish preparation planning beginning at 2:30pm.
