About Us

First Amendment Watch, a project of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University, helps to educate the public about the critical role the First Amendment plays in our democracy. We document contemporary threats to the freedoms of speech, press, assembly, and petition, and provide analysis, legal cases and historical background.

Our website provides accurate information and critical legal and historical context that citizens, educators, and students need to understand their rights to free expression. We have also created a series of teacher guides on First Amendment issues for secondary and college-level students, as well as stand-alone modules on campus speech issues for freshman orientation programs.
