    The Zoological Foundation of El Salvador (FUNZEL) is a Salvadoran non-profit organization, founded in 1989, with a mission to protect and conserve the wildlife of El Salvador. FUNZEL is involved in various programs and projects to conserve wildlife and their ecosystems but specializes in conservation programs for four species of sea turtle that nest on the beaches of El Salvador – hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), green (Chelonian mydas) and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea). In addition, FUNZEL is involved in government and university supported research programs, emergency and basic medical attention for wildlife, and environmental education activities regarding the hazards and illegality of trafficking and domestication of wild animals.
