The People's Seed

  • About Us

The People’s Seed is a new, dynamic non-profit based in Durham, NC whose mission is to create a viable and thriving seed and plant breeding system that supports farmer success, food security, nutrition and protection of the environment. The People’s Seed was founded on the idea that our current seed and plant breeding system is broken, allowing for the mass consolidation of seed companies and the constraining of innovation in plant improvement for organic growers. A new system that grants fair and open access to regionally adapted seed and plant varieties is necessary in order for farmers to thrive in the age of climate change and the industrial food supply chain. The People’s Seed works to grow a new seed system by connecting the dots between plant breeders, farmers, and the rest of the food system. Since our founding in 2017, the People’s Seed has worked towards these goals by beginning to establish our base programs in co-op grocery store education, organic plant breeder funding and helping organize breeder-farmer events.
