About Us

Founded in 2004, TAKE Dance Company is a 10-member New York City based contemporary dance troupe. Japanese born and Juilliard educated Artistic Director Takehiro Ueyama began his career as a Principal Dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company before branching out on his own. Take’s work blends eastern and western sensibilities to communicate the universal human condition. Collaborating with contemporary artists in other creative genres is one of the motivating factors in Take’s creative process. His choreography is diverse and his style ranges from the classical to the avant-garde in a stunning blend of lyricism and athleticism.

TAKE Dance has performed nationwide at the New Noises Festival at the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Jacob’s Pillow, Becket, Massachussetts, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center in Tivoli, New York, PS/21 Chatham, New York, and in Manhattan at the Joyce Soho, Thalia Theater at Symphony Space, the Ailey Citigroup Theater, and Central Park SummerStage, among others. The Company recently completed its fourth annual New York Season at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University.

Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times claims Mr. Ueyama has “an unusual gift for creating and putting together big, bold movement” and his “dances are freshly and distinctly his own.”

Tobi Tobias calls “Takehiro Ueyama a fusion choreographer.” “He melds movement, music and themes derived from his roots in both East and West…without looking ‘artsy’.”

Wendy Libertore of The Daily Gazette states “Sublime, the untenable quality that expresses humanity’s joint conflicts and strides. Ueyama speaks of hope in troubled times.”
