About Us

On Our Own of Howard County, Inc. was originally founded in 1985 as a self-help advocacy organization for individuals who are or have been consumers of mental health services. Our Own has had a presence in Howard County at various times since then. In 1999 On Our Own of Howard County was re-organized and re-established as a not-for-profit membership organization. It is run by mental health consumers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our Mission is to provide peer support, advocacy, education and social connectedness to people with mental conditions in any form. We seek members who strive to empower themselves by being active participants in their personal recovery. We work to transform the service delivery system through our self-directed approach to obtaining healing and sustaining wellness. We are a community that views our members as our greatest resource knowing that we can provide the hope and promise of recovery that only a peer can. All are welcome at our table. Come learn more about this opportunity for acceptance, belonging and non-judgment. No appointment is necessary: come when you can, leave when you have to. On Our Own of Howard County, Inc. works with a network of On Our Own groups in Maryland. It is supported by grant funds provided through the Maryland Mental Hygiene Administration and the Howard County Mental Health Authority and by dues and contributions
